Alabama Amateur Radio Week
On Friday June 17th, 2005, Governor Riley signed a proclamation declaring Alabama Amateur Radio Week! Nine Alabama amateur radio operators were present during the Governors signing of the proclamation on Friday in Montgomery. Alabama assistant SM for youth activities Rebekah Dorf WG4Y, Angela Williams WN4C, Montgomery Amateur Radio Club President Scott Poole W4SPA, MARC Vice-President Rick Seeders KG4PNL, MARC Treasurer Dave Hyman KG4YJK, MARC Secretary Tim Dixon KG4MIQ, MARC Publicity Shawn Thomas KI4CSQ, Clay Redden KC4YAU and Alabama Section Manager Greg Sarratt W4OZK witnessed the signing. We are excited that Alabama Amateur Radio Week is now officially June 20-26 and Field Day is June 25-26. Thousands of amateur radio operators across Alabama will setup and operate next weekend in this Nation wide event. For many amateurs this will be their first Field Day, help to make this an exciting day for them. This visit was a great opportunity to meet and talk with the governor about amateur radio and a great way to kick off Amateur Radio Week and Field Day in Alabama! I look forward to seeing many of you at South Alabama Field Day sites this year. For the Section Manager Field Day bonus look for me on 3.965MHz especially at the Alabama Day and ATNM net times. Have fun, be safe and put on the best Field Day you can! For more information about Amateur Radio Week and Field Day visit www.arrl-al.org 73, Alabama Section Manager
Hams to gear up for long distance records06-17-2004 (The Cleburne News) Many of Cleburne County's Amateur Radio operators will work 'round-the-clock the week-end of June 26 and 27 to set up field radio communication stations, get on the air and contact hundreds of other ham operators in the U.S. and Canada as part of participation in the American Radio Relay League's Field Day. According to Turkey Heaven Mountain Repeater Association President Gordon McKinney, the Field Day is the annual "shakedown run" for the ARRL's National Field Organization. "Field Day is a way for hams to get outdoors and have fun under some difficult conditions," McKinney says, "But it 's also a chance to fine-tune emergency communication skills. We use generators and battery power and we set up antennas in the field. The idea is to put together a self-sufficient, working station quickly and begin making contacts." The ARRL Field Organization has been effective in establishing emergency communications nets during floods, hurricanes, fires, earthquakes and were instrumental in providing communications on 9-11-01 into and out of the disaster area. Members of formal emergency organizations such as Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) and the Radio Amateur Communications Emergency Services (RACES) regularly participate with the local Emergency Management Association in state-wide drills. The ARRL estimates that more than 35,000 hams participate in Field Day every year. Cleburne County's Field Day operations will be held at the old AT&T tower site on County Road 852 on Turkey Heaven Mountain. Set-up begins at 8 a.m. June 26. The public is invited. For more information contact Gordon McKinney at 748-8231.
